GTA VI Gameplay Footage Leaks

UPDATE: Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier has now confirmed with Rockstar sources that this leak is indeed real. In a tweet(Opens in a new window) Schreier said:

“Not that there was much doubt, but I’ve confirmed with Rockstar sources that this weekend’s massive Grand Theft Auto VI leak is indeed real. The footage is early and unfinished, of course. This is one of the biggest leaks in video game history and a nightmare for Rockstar Games.”

The leaker also claims to have source code and assets for the game, although this hasn’t been confirmed by Rockstar yet.

Original Story:
A debate is currently raging online as to whether dozens of videos purporting to be captured from a leaked Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) test build are real.

The footage was posted as a download on the GTAForums(Opens in a new window) by user teapotuberhacker, along with the message, “Its possible i could leak more data soon, GTA 5 and 6 source code and assets, GTA 6 testing build.”

As IGN reports(Opens in a new window), teapotuberhacker claims the files were downloaded from Rockstar’s internal Slack groups, suggesting the leak is a result of a hack similar to the one Uber faced earlier this week.

There are elements contained in the videos suggesting this is legitimate footage. For example, the debug elements visible on screen look very similar to the tools used in Red Dead Redemption 2. Some of the features we are expecting to be included in GTA VI (male and female playable characters, Vice City setting) also look to be confirmed by this footage.

Jason Schreier, a Bloomberg reporter who wrote a detailed article about what to expect from GTA VI(Opens in a new window) back in July, tweeted(Opens in a new window) today that, “I just woke up and haven’t asked anyone yet but based on the scale hard to imagine it’s not real. Plus two protagonists and Vice City match what I reported earlier this year.”

Developer Rockstar and publisher Take-Two have yet to comment, but it’s clear that something has leaked. Now we just need to find out how serious of a leak this is. If teapotuberhacker did indeed manage to grab the source code, that could have serious implications for the remainder of the game’s development.
