‘I think my neighbour has been hacking my wifi and might even know my banking password’

The cunning neighbour seems to be mocking the complainant for their ‘easy’ passwords and trolls them by copying the same things they are watching online – people have offered advice for keeping their router more secure

One of the biggest gambles with moving house is not knowing the temperament of your new neighbours. The lucky ones among us are met with friendly greetings and sometimes even a welcoming gift, but others are left with difficult neighbours that make unsociable noise, steal our parking spots and even nab out post or wheelie bins.

One unfortunate person has ended up with a seemingly tech-savvy neighbour who they suspect is ‘hacking’ their wifi. Not only that, but the cunning neighbour also seems to know the person’s bank account password as they were heard mocking the complainant through the ‘thin walls’ over how ‘easy’ it was to figure out.

Taking to Reddit to ask for advice on how to keep their online details more secure, the anonymous poster explained why they have a hunch about their suspicious neighbour as they seem to be trolling them while hacking their internet access.

They said: “I suspect my neighbors [sic] hacked my wifi and I need to know how to change my password and make my network more secure going forward.

“I say this because whenever I’m watching a video on my laptop with my earphones in connected by Bluetooth, I constantly hear them repeat the same things I’m listening to from the video.”

The person admitted that they thought they were ‘just imagining things’ at first, but insisted that it had been going on ‘for the longest’.

Things got worse when they revealed that they suspect their neighbour knows their banking details, as they said: “One time when I was logging into my bank account information and just finished typing my password, I heard ‘that was easy’ from the same neighbors [sic]”.

“Even my wifi speeds have been slow and lags a lot which never happened before since they moved in. For reference I live in an apartment with really thin walls,” they concluded.

People took to the comments section on the Reddit post to try and offer advice to the person who was left stuck on what to do about the alleged hacker.

One person wrote a detailed response, explaining: “Factory reset the router. There should be a little button that you can hit with the tip of a pen that will do the factory reset, probably on the back of the router. That should clear all devices from your network so you can secure it.

Google ‘default gateway IP address’ for your brand / model router. Enter that IP address into your browser, and you may need to connect to it with an Ethernet cable to do get this to work.

“Your default username / password may be something like admin / admin. You may need your manual or Google to provide this. You’ll change the username / pw to something more secure during the setup.

“A random mix of capital / lowercase numbers letters and symbols numbers will accomplish this. The more characters used, the harder it will be to crack”.

Another suggested that “often they have the password on the bottom of the device” to which another commenter responded “that’s a great point that I overlooked, good call”.
