‘I’ve found a baby name I love – but people say it reminds them of slime’

A mum-to-be has picked out a baby name that she really loves, but she’s been having second thoughts about it after someone told it her it sounds ‘like slime’

The name you choose for your baby is ultimately your decision to make, but for many parents, it’s become customary to ask for opinions on your options ahead of your little one’s arrival to make sure that your choice is a good as you think it is.

And one mum-to-be has now found out the hard way that not everyone has the same thought process as she does, as her choice of name has split opinions online. The woman said that she’s had the name Gloriana picked out as a potential baby name since before she got pregnant and so has been excited to finally get to use it – but has been let down by the reactions from people in her social circle and on the internet.

In a post on Reddit, she said: “Baby girl due this Christmas, everyone hates my favourite name idea.

“I really like the name Gloriana for our little girl. It’s pronounced the way you’d say Ariana. I think Glory is a cute nickname and she can still go by Anna later on if she hates it. I’ve loved this name before I ever got pregnant.

“My mother-in-law and husband love it but my father-in-law and other relatives kind of hate it. I keep being told it’s my baby and I can name her whatever and not to worry about other people’s opinions. But that’s not entirely true.

“This is my daughter’s name. It is important and it’s something she has to carry for her entire life. I don’t want her to be stuck with a stupid name. So, name nerds of Reddit, exactly how terrible is this name? Would it be a mistake to give it to my daughter?”

Commenters on the Reddit post were split on the name though, as some people said they thought it was “beautiful”, and others said they couldn’t help but compare it to “slime”.

One person said: “I think it’s beautiful! I say go for it!”

While another added: “I like it, it’s unique without being difficult to pronounce or spell and it has a really strong feel to it.”

But someone else disagreed, writing: “For me, the ‘GL’ sound doesn’t sound very pleasant. It sounds guttural, like Gertrude or Greer. Or even more so, gore. I don’t have synesthesia, but certain names give clear associations to me. Gloria/na makes me think of thick slime and goop. I’m so sorry! It’s not the worst name I just personally dislike it.”

And a fourth posted: “I think the first consonant sounds throaty and for some reason, it conjures up … not good vibes. Ana is nice, and I don’t even mind Glory as a middle or nickname. But together, they don’t work for me.”
