Lane Kiffin responds to Auburn report with on-brand Twitter denial: ‘That’s news to me’

Lane Kiffin is still with Ole Miss — For now.

The ball coach confirmed as much Monday, when it was reported he will be stepping down as the Rebels’ head coach as soon as Friday, just a day after Ole Miss’ Egg Bowl against intrastate rival Mississippi State.

The report indicated Kiffin will be leaving for the greener pastures of Auburn, where he would share the state with one of the teams he came with: Alabama.

Kiffin, however, isn’t taking those rumors lying down. He took to Twitter shortly after the reports, trying to reassure everyone where his focus is at.

Then, Kiffin dropped the facade, and took aim at Jon Sokoloff, the initiator of the report.

However, one of Twitter’s best didn’t stop there. He then decided to take it a step further and make it slightly more personal.

He even retweeted a particularly mean-spirited meme from an Ole Miss fan account.

Kiffin to Auburn rumors have been swirling since Bryan Harsin was fired by the Tigers, so it’s understandable he’s a bit fed up. He’s taken a program that was 15-21 (6-18 SEC) under Matt Luke and in three years brought it to 23-11 (14-10).

“I’m extremely happy here,” Kiffin has said on his time in Oxford, per 247Sports. The difference in where this program is compared to three years ago, and we feel like we have really good support,” Kiffin said Monday. “I can get up here and give the pine box speech and ‘I’m not going to be the next head coach at Alabama.’ I can give you those things. I don’t know what those mean. Been here three years and have been fortunate enough to have three different contracts. I don’t know why a fourth contract makes people feel better. Like I said, we’re very appreciative of everything here.”

That isn’t an “I’m leaving,” but it also clearly isn’t a definitive “I’m staying” either. Kiffin has avoided such shackling statements and instead chosen to airily pontificate about where the program is compared to where it was. A large part of that is likely angling for a raise, as he and Ole Miss continue to negotiate a new contract. But Kiffin, like anyone else, is probably enjoying being wanted.

With that being said, saying he’s leaving directly after a game was apparently a bridge too far. And if Kiffin gets crossed on Twitter, he’s going to straighten things out very quickly.
