Liverpool vs. Southampton live score, updates and highlights as Nunez doubles hosts’ lead

ANFIELD, LIVERPOOL — Less than a week ago, Nathan Jones was preparing to take Luton to Blackpool and Stoke. Now the Welshman is readying himself for Anfield, where he will oversee his first game as Southampton manager.

Jones is not the first manager to start their Premier League career at Anfield this season. Brighton’s Roberto de Zerbi saw his team storm into a 2-0 lead, eventually drawing 3-3 at Liverpool in October. And Southampton will be hoping to take similar advantage of the Reds’ patchy form.

Liverpool needed penalties to beat Derby County in the Carabao Cup when the third-tier side were the visitors on Wednesday and lost at home to Leeds when they were last at home in the Premier League.

85th min: Anfield not quite as loud as you’d expect in these final stages with the visitors doing all the pushing for a goal that would tee up a thrilling end to the game.

77th min: Southampton so nearly get the goal they carve!

Maitland-Niles swings in an inch-perfect cross and Adams’ header looks goalbound until Alisson gets a strong hand out to palm it away.

73rd min: Liverpool’s lead might look comfortable on paper but Southampton have had chances and a goal here would make for a nervous finish.

64th min: Three huge chances in quick succession!

The first sees Alisson deny Elyounoussi at close range before Salah is muscled off a one-on-one by Bella-Kotchap at the other end.

Then, Alisson again comes to Liverpool’s rescue with a stop from Edozie after he had been played in behind.

58th min: A triple sub for Southampton with Walcott, Maitland-Niles and Edozie coming on for the two Armstrongs and Caleta-Car.

52nd min: Liverpool controlling things here – have they largely have done since the Southampton equaliser.

46th min: Back under way here as Liverpool get the game restarted.

HALFTIME: The whistle sounds at Anfield and Liverpool take a 3-1 lead into the break. 

Darwin Nunez has had one of his best games in a red shirt so far and the hosts deserve their advantage.

42nd min: GOAL! Nunez at the double for Liverpool.

Another simple finish for the Uruguayan, who slides in to finish off a low Robertson cross after Firmino plays him in down the left-hand side.

30th min: Bazunu saves Southampton again!

The Irishman springs into action to deny Firmino, who was fed by an inventive flick from Nunez after yet more good play from Liverpool.

21st min: GOAL! Another goal for Liverpool and it’s Nunez who gets it.

The Uruguayan bends his run before latching onto an Elliott dink in behind and coolly passing it beyond Bazunu. He is really hitting form now for the Reds.

16th min: Liverpool almost get themselves back in front.

Nunez gets away down the left and sends a perfect low cross into Salah’s path at the back stick but Bazunu is down to make a wonderful save. 

9th min: GOAL! An immediate response from the visitors!

Ward-Prowse puts in a typically excellent inswinging free-kick from the Southampton left and sets up Adams for a simple header past Alisson.

6th min: GOAL! Liverpool take an early lead as Firmino heads in.

It’s not the most powerful header you’ll ever see but the Brazilian places it brilliantly into the far corner from a Robertson free-kick delivery.

30 mins to KO: A shock result in today’s early kick-off, with Manchester City losing 2-1 to Brentford at the Etihad. Usually that would be useful to Liverpool in terms of the title race, but their aims are slightly different this season.

1 hour to KO: Liverpool hit with yet more injury woe ahead of this one as Ibrahima Konate, Jordan Henderson, Calvin Ramsay and Curtis Jones drop out of the squad entirely.

Why is Jurgen Klopp not on the touchline?

Jurgen Klopp will not be in the dugout as Liverpool take on Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

The German is serving a one-match touchline ban after being sent off in his side’s 1-0 win over Manchester City last month.

Klopp had initially been handed only a fine but has received a harsher punishment following an FA appeal.

Liverpool vs. Southampton betting odds, prediction

Liverpool produced a performance more closely resembling their recent title-challenging campaigns in their 2-1 win at Tottenham last time out and are overwhelming favourites to earn a 10th win in 11 games against Southampton.

The visitors’ long odds to win could be tempting in light of Liverpool’s current curious run of three successive defeats when they have played against teams in the Premier League relegation zone. Although Saints have only won once in nine league games, two of their three top-flight wins this season have been away from home and they could be boosted by their new manager.

Our prediction, however, is a 2-0 win for Liverpool, condemning Southampton to the relegation zone at Christmas for the first time since the 2004-05 season. Mohamed Salah can claim his 100th goal or assist at Anfield for Liverpool – the Egypt superstar currently has 70 goals and 29 assists.
