Kylie Jenner’s latest venture into the world of dolls has sparked a multitude of reactions from fans and critics alike. The makeup magnate unveiled her full-sized Bratz doll collection through an Instagram video on Monday, August 21. However, the initial impressions of the designs weren’t universally positive, as several Instagram followers expressed concerns about the doll’s darker skin tone. Amidst the array of feedback, opinions diverged, with some voicing appreciation while others critiqued the collection.
At 26 years old, Kylie enthusiastically introduced the dolls, writing in the caption, “The girls are hereeee. From growing up with @bratz dolls to having my very own! A heartfelt thank you to the bratz team!! ahhhh I’m obsessed.” She went on to share that the dolls were “currently available for pre order” on bratz.com, Target.com, and Amazon.com, with plans to hit store shelves on October 1.
However, the dolls’ distinctive feature, a skin tone darker than Kylie’s own natural color, ignited a divided reaction among fans. One follower commented, “Wow, in my opinion, this is not a favorable representation. People should think twice before supporting this endeavor.” Another echoed the sentiment, stating, “I concur. These dolls are potentially setting up incorrect ideals.” Some voices were more emphatic, with an individual passionately writing in all capital letters, “YOU ARE NOT THAT DARK GIRL, WHAT ARE YOU ATTEMPTING TO ACHIEVE? THIS IS EXCESSIVE,” while another chimed in, “Your complexion isn’t that deep, thus your bratz dolls should not depict such a hue.”
On the flip side, there were enthusiasts of Kylie’s Bratz dolls, with a considerable number confirming their preorders. “I have a fondness for Bratz, and Kylie is undeniably authentic. Let people live and let live,” a supporter celebrated, while another articulated, “Given that there are many young girls who likely view Kylie as a role model, this design has been impeccably executed, in my view.”
Intricately detailed, the new full-sized dolls showcased Kylie in two distinctive ensembles. One doll sported a replica of her one-shouldered sheer black dress from the CFDA Fashion Awards in November 2022, complemented by her sophisticated updo hairstyle. Accompanying the doll was one of Kylie’s Italian greyhounds and a gleaming silver star.
The second doll mirrored Kylie’s appearance in a black patent leather Blumarine minidress adorned with a rose applique, coupled with matching black boots—a look she donned during a date night with ex-boyfriend Travis Scott in October 2022. The doll’s hair, akin to that of the former couple photographed leaving West Hollywood hotspot Craig’s, cascaded elegantly, and the accessory ensemble included a vibrant red purse.
The collaboration between Kylie and Bratz marked the first-ever celebrity partnership for the doll brand and was launched on August 1. This collection featured mini-versions of the dolls, replete with iconic outfits from the Kardashian star’s wardrobe. These ensembles encompassed her 2019 Met Gala lilac Versace gown and matching purple wig, along with her striking 2022 Met Gala “bridal” ensemble designed by the late Off-White visionary, Virgil Abloh.
Bratz’s Creative Director, Jasmin Larian, reflected on the significance of this partnership, stating, “This collaboration with Kylie Jenner marks a pivotal moment in Bratz’s history. Kylie genuinely embodies the ethos that Bratz has embodied for the past 22 years—embracing disruption, individuality, and exuberance.” She further commented, “Through this collaboration, we aim not only to connect with Kylie’s vast fan base but also to resonate with those who grew up cherishing Bratz and are excited to rekindle the Y2K Bratz lifestyle in the present. We couldn’t be more elated to welcome Kylie into the extended Bratz family.”
