PGA Tour Championship purse, payouts: How much does the FedEx Cup winner make in 2022?

Forget the pot of gold, there’s a massive check at the end of the rainbow.

The 2021-22 PGA Tour tour season is at its end this weekend, when 29 of the world’s best golfers take the stage at East Lake Golf Course in Atlanta, Ga. While they’re playing for professional pride, they’re really playing for a heavy, gaudy paycheck.

This year’s top-step finisher will take home $3 million more than last year’s winner, Patrick Cantlay. Cantlay, though, is still in the running to win the FedEx Cup and become the first player since the playoffs were introduced in 2007 to win back-to-back.

Cantlay is joined by No. 1-ranked Scottie Scheffler to tee off on Thursday afternoon in Round 1. Scheffler, the 2022 Masters winner, has three other wins in PGA Tour events since the start of the 2021-22 season.

Here’s how this year’s Tour Championship purse breaks down.

PGA Tour Championship purse for 2022

This year’s FedEx Cup purse sits at a hefty $75 million. It’s a season-long tournament of sorts, making the pot extra large.

The winner takes home roughly a quarter of the total purse.

How much money does the PGA Tour Championship winner get?

The Tour Championship victor will take home a hefty check of $18 million. That’s the largest single check in any PGA Tour event throughout the year, obviously.

The difference between first and second place is hefty: The second-place finisher takes home $6.5 million, making an $11.5 million difference between first- and second-place golfers.

Third place takes home a total of $5 million, with denominations decreasing all the way to No. 30, who will cash a half-million dollar check.

If two players tie, then the values of the two tied spots will be averaged out and evenly split amongst them.

PGA Tour Championship payouts

Will Zalatoris, who has been playing well all year long, withdrew from the FedEx Cup playoffs with an injury. As such, he will finish in 30th and take home $500,000, unless there are other withdrawals between now and the end of the tournament.

The difference between finishing first and second is a whopping $11.5 million.
