With the chilly autumn weather drawing in, many arachnophobes will now no doubt be dreading the sight of large male spiders stomping around their home in search of a mate. Thankfully, there are a number of easy ways to keep them from getting too comfortable, and you won’t need to blow your weekly budget on pricey products.
As previously reported by Birmingham Live, one hack which is known to be particularly effective is a good old-fashioned lemon, which you can grab from your local Tesco for just 30p. Spiders have sensors on their legs to assist with smell and taste and are said to absolutely loathe the scent of lemon.

You can whip up a lemon spider repellant in no time, by simply filling up a one-quart spray bottle with water and one tablespoon of all-natural lemon essential oil, and giving this mixture a good shake.
This spray can then be used indoors along windowsills, pipes, and other such openings. You can also use it in your garden, however, you will have to reapply this each time it rains as it will end up getting washed away.
According to Expert Home Tips, you can also use lemons to keep spiders away from your basement or garages by rubbing the peel against skirting boards and door frames. If you aren’t too keen on the citrusy scent of lemon, then others swear by swapping this for peppermint, diluted white vinegar, or lavender.
Experts at End of Tenancy have advised: “We would recommend mixing peppermint oil with water in a spray bottle and then spraying the areas of your home that you have noticed to be susceptible to spiders.
“However, because peppermint oil is toxic to pets, we recommend avoiding this method if you have any furry friends.”
Although it hasn’t been scientifically proven, many people also claim a handful of conkers – which you can collect completely free from your local park – can do wonders when it comes to putting spiders off your home.
