Vietnamese ‘Snail’ Short Film Is Straight Up ‘Dope’, Getting Feature Length Adaptation

Date:

Hold up, film fanatics! There’s some legit buzz coming out of Cannes, and it’s all about a Vietnamese short film titled ‘The Dream Is a Snail.’ This flick, which just premiered at the prestigious festival, is straight up slaying, already getting the green light for a full-blown feature adaptation. No cap, that’s a huge deal for filmmaker Nguyá»…n Thiên Ân, whose unique vision is clearly hitting different with industry heavyweights.

This whole ‘feature film’ glow-up isn’t just happening by chance; the project scored a spot in Cannes’ Focus Co-Pro, an initiative designed to mentor and network debut feature projects in their earliest stages. East Films and Kontribute are highkey driving this adaptation, ready to expand ‘The Snail Automaton’ – the feature’s new title – from its humble, intimate short beginnings. It’s wild to think this started as a bold sci-fi, slapstick action comedy concept, which is super rare for the Vietnamese market, and now it’s getting its full potential unleashed.

For those who haven’t caught the original ‘Dream Is a Snail,’ the premise is lowkey wild but totally compelling. It follows Huy, a background actor who’s just trying to make it, taking this totally unusual gig at a senior rejuvenation workshop. His job? Letting snails race across his body. This bizarre scenario briefly makes him an unlikely star, only for him to be quickly replaced. The film then goes deep into his need to reclaim that fleeting feeling of being seen, navigating themes of longing, performance, and the thin line between being visible and vulnerability.

Nguyá»…n Thiên Ân, the visionary behind this ‘dope’ concept, shared that for him, the snail is a symbol of absurdity that, ironically, gets celebrated. He even joked it satirizes him every time he has to explain its meaning – for real! But more profoundly, ‘the dream is’ in the title serves as a reminder that if a dream as strange as ‘a snail’ can become reality, then truly, no dream is out of reach. That’s a powerful message, especially coming from a filmmaker whose observational style focuses on the emotional textures of everyday life, an approach that surely resonates with diverse audiences.

The journey of this project has been a testament to collaborative spirit, originating from Ho Chi Minh City with production by Thảo Quiêngg of Kontribute, alongside Bao Nguyen and Anderson Le from East Films. It was initially developed through the CJ Short Film Project, backed by the CJ Foundation and the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA), showcasing how vital these foundational programs are for emerging talent. East Films is now holding down the fort on international press and festival strategy, making sure this unique Vietnamese story gets its well-deserved global spotlight. It’s a prime example of indie film making a splash internationally, and that’s just awesome.

The initial reactions, like Bao Nguyen from East Films stating the film ‘stayed with me’ and praising its humor and tenderness, really hit different. It’s a testament to Ân’s original voice and the power of a story that’s strange, funny, and unforgettable. The upcoming feature adaptation, ‘The Snail Automaton,’ has the potential to expand on these captivating themes and characters, reaching an even wider audience. We’re talking about a story that transcends cultural barriers with its universal themes, proving that sometimes, the weirdest dreams are the ones that truly resonate. Can’t wait to see this one on the big screen, for real.
