Tis’ the season for sparkles, glitz and glamour, as Christmas is fast approaching and with it comes plenty of festive parties with work colleagues or pals. The Christmas works do is the perfect time to let loose after a busy year, but choosing the perfect outfit for the occasion is often a struggle.

Unless your co-workers have shared their plans for the big night, you may be feeling stuck on the appropriate attire to choose. Sequins are a given for Christmas celebrations, but one woman has sparked a fierce debate after admitting that she wants to wear a white maxi dress for hers that is slightly ‘see through’.

Taking to Mumsnet to ask for advice, the woman wrote: “I have a white/cream cotton maxi dress that I’m wondering could I wear to my work Christmas party.

“It’s a bit see-through so I would wear a slip underneath. Could I make this more festive and suitable? Normal attire would be glitzy sequinned glam dresses.”

The partygoer then shared a snap of the dress in question – a floaty maxi number with spaghetti straps and a tiered skirt. The model showcasing the frock is stood in front of the sea, only adding to the beachy feel.

Many people flocked to the comments section on the post to urge the woman not to wear the dress for her Christmas party, arguing that it’s far too summery for the occasion.

One person wrote: “It feels like a summer dress to me tbh [to be honest], not sure how you’d make it feel festive”.

Meanwhile, another added: “I wouldn’t wear that in winter. Long white dress you can only get away with in summer or at your own wedding”.

A third Mumsnetter scathed “Looks like a summer beach cover up”.

Others offered suggestions on how the woman could make the frock more festive, as one joked: “Some wings and a halo made from a wire coat hanger and silver tinsel?”.

The debate comes as another woman recently caused controversy with her ‘inappropriate’ Christmas outfit from Zara.

In a post on Mumsnet, the partygoer shared a photo of Zara’s Asymmetric Bustier top, writing: “I’m planning to get this bustier from Zara for my office Christmas party, which is black tie/cocktail dress code. (It will come back into stock in time. It WILL)

But people slammed her choice as they argued it wasn’t the right style for a party with colleagues, as one person asked “Are you absolutely sure that this is suitable attire for your office Christmas party?”

“I’d have thought most people wouldn’t consider something so revealing in my honest opinion.”

The strapless black top boasts one sleeve and asymmetric detailing – but people were very critical of the choice.
