Cristiano Ronaldo’s dream of winning a first World Cup in his final tournament is very much alive. Portugal have officially qualified to the Round of 16 after a victory over Uruguay and now all that’s left to confirm is whether they’ll go through as the group winners or runners-up.
The Portuguese are in pole position to win the group and will only need a draw against South Korea to confirm the top spot. But the Koreans will be focused on trying to win that game in the hope to claiming the other berth from the group.
The battle for the final spot will come down to the Koreans, Uruguay, and Ghana. The African side has the leg up after their 3-2 win over South Korea on the second matchday. They’ve looked the better side of the three so far, but will have to finish the job on the final day.
And it shapes up to be doubly sweet for the Ghanaians since they can book their place and knockout Uruguay at the same time. Luis Suarez and La Celeste were responsible for Ghana’s cruel ouster in the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup with an unsportsmanlike hand ball on the goal line that prevented the winning goal from crossing the line.
