Ghana vs. Uruguay live: World Cup score, highlights, result from 2022 Group H match as De Arrascaeta puts South Americans ahead after Ayew penalty miss

Twelve years on from their infamous meeting in the World Cup quarterfinals, Ghana and Uruguay will go head-to-head again today.

In one of the most memorable moments of drama in recent finals, the pair played out a thriller at South Africa 2010, with Uruguay striker Luis Suarez handling a Ghana shot on the line deep into extra time to deliberately prevent the Black Stars from scoring what would have been a winner.

Ghana missed the subsequent spot-kick, and the South Americans went on to win in a penalty shootout to claim a place in the semifinals.

Fast forward to today, and Suarez is expected to be in the Uruguay lineup once again, as both these sides seek a victory that would likely be enough to send them through to the knockout stages in Qatar.

South Korea need a big win against already qualified Portugal in the other Group H fixture to have any say in that.

The Sporting News is tracking live scoring updates and highlights for Ghana vs. Uruguay at the 2022 World Cup. Follow below for complete results from the Group H match in Qatar.

Ghana vs. Uruguay live updates, highlights from 2022 World Cup

81 mins: SAVED! Nicolas De La Cruz loses out to Mohammed Kudus in midfield, and the Ghana danger man picks the ball up on the edge of the box. He arcs a shot towards the bottom corner, but Sergio Rochet gets across brilliantly to tip the ball onto the post and out! What a save!

79 mins: WIDE!!! Thomas Partey’s hacked ball forward is missed by two Uruguay defenders and drops to Antoine Semenyo in the box. The substitute is one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but skews his effort wide of the far post with Sergio Rochet beaten!

77 mins: Federico Valverde spots Lawrence Ati-Zigi off his line and looks to beat the goalkeeper from the halfway line, but sends his ambitious effort over and behind!

76 mins: Kamaldeen Sulemana drives at Guillermo Varela and wins a corner in the process. The ball is crossed into the box, but Sebastian Coates heads it clear and Uruguay look to break through Edison Cavani!

73 mins: Otto Addo throws the dice with more changes for Ghana, as Inaki Williams and Salis Abdul Samed come off for Daniel-Kofi Kyereh and Antoine Semenyo respectively.

71 mins: Mohammed Kudus drives through the middle and evades three defenders on his way to goal. He shoots from the edge of the box, but his 20-yard effort flies over the bar!

70 mins: SAVED!!! A cross into the Ghanaian box is headed away by Mohammed Salisu, and the loose ball is met by a thumping Federico Valverde shot on the volley! The piledriving shot is heading in, but Lawrence Ati-Zigi gets down low to parry the ball away!

69 mins: Ghana win a corner, and the ball’s bouncing all over the place in the box. It comes down to Thomas Partey, whose first touch is poor and the ball rolls into the gloves of Sergio Rochet before he can shoot!

66 mins: The scourge of Ghana leaves the field having, played a huge part in this 2-0. Suarez comes off to rapturous applause from the Uruguay faithful. He’s replaced by Edinson Cavani, and Facundo Pellistri also comes off for Nicolas De La Cruz.

65 mins: WIDE!!! Darwin Nunez brings the ball inside from the left, and some beautiful one-touch plays gives Facundo Pellistri space to shoot. He does so, but snatches at his effort and sends it into the side netting!

64 mins: Kamaldeen Sulemana whips a teasing cross into the Uruguay box, and Sergio Rochet comes to claim it. The goalkeeper gets nowhere near the ball though, and Osman Bukari can’t turn the ball home after making a late run at the back post!

61 mins: Luis Suarez barrels into Mohammed Salisu on halfway, sending the Ghana centre-back crashing to the floor. The Uruguay captain is booked as a result, meaning that alongside Darwin Nunez, both of La Celeste’s striking pair are walking a tightrope for the rest of the game.

59 mins: NO PENALTY! The referee heads over to the VAR screen on the touchline, and spots a slight hand-ball by Darwin Nunez as he controlled the ball. This came before the challenge, and so it’s a free-kick in Ghana’s favour rather than a penalty!

58 mins: Darwin Nunez races into the box, but is forced wide and goes down under pressure from Daniel Amartey! The referee waves play-on, but is instructed to stop play by VAR in his ear, and we’re set for another dissection of this challenge for a potential penalty!

56 mins: Mohammed Salisu’s good ball forward is met by a good run from Kamaldeen Sulemana, but Sergio Rochet is out to pluck the ball out of the sky and win it well for Uruguay!

54 mins: Guillermo Varela and Facundo Pellistri play a one-two on the right, but the latter is fouled for a Uruguay free-kick. Federico Valverde crosses the ball in, but a Uruguayan is offside and the chance dissipates!

50 mins: Osman Bukari finds space down the right again and hangs a cross into the danger area, but it’s over the heads of everyone and Jose Gimenez clears for Uruguay.

47 mins: WIDE!!! An immediate chance for Ghana as Osman Bukari chests down the ball in the box. The substitute shoots low across goal, and Mohammed Kudus follows in, but Kudus can’t divert the ball goalwards as it rolls wide of the far post!

46 mins: The two sides return for the second half, with Ghana replacing brothers Andre and Jordan Ayew with Osman Bukari and Kamaldeen Sulemana respectively, and Inaki Williams kicks off the second half for the Black Stars!

HT: The first half comes to an end, and what a half it was! Potentially the best 45 minutes of football we’ve seen in this tournament so far, we’ve seen two quick-fire Uruguay goals follow an agonising penalty miss at the other end.

Watch Georgian De Arrascaeta’s superb strike for his second goal of the match (USA):

Watch if you are in Canada:

Ghana’s VAR-awarded penalty gave the Black Stars an chance to open the scoring after 20 minutes, but the ghosts of 2010 haunted Andre Ayew as he slowly approached the ball, before firing it straight into the gloves of Sergio Rochet.

That almighty scare sparked Uruguay into life, and their world-class stars came to the fore as they responded with aplomb. Luis Suarez’s shot in the box was saved, but Georgian De Arrascaeta was on hand to put it in and open the scoring for the Celeste. The Flamengo winger scored again just six minutes later, finishing off a vibrant Uruguay move with a stunning volley.

The Black Stars’ collapse following that penalty miss was firmly capitalised on by Uruguay, and their 2-0 lead currently has them second in the group behind Portugal, going through to the last 16 at Ghana’s expense.

45+8 mins: A deep cross from the left looks for Inaki Williams, but flies through and into the gloves of Sergio Rochet in the last action of the first half!

45+6 mins: Uruguay demand a penalty of their own after Facundo Pellistri is blocked off from chasing a loose ball by Daniel Amartey in the box. Pellistri and his team-mates claim he was elbowed by Amartey, but the referee waves away their protests as Lawrence Ati-Zigi gathers for Ghana!

45+5 mins: Federico Valverde is chopped down on the right flank by Jordan Ayew, and swings in the resultant free-kick. Luis Suarez gets his head to the ball, but can only glance his front-post header wide of the target!

45+1 mins: Just the EIGHT added minutes confirmed by the fourth official, and this wild first half is far from over yet!

45 mins: A wide Uruguay free-kick from the right evades everyone, but is recovered by Suarez on the left. He dribbles back into the box and looks to cross, but the ball ricochets back off him and behind for a Ghana goal kick.

42 mins: Alidu Seidu is caught accidentally by the studs of Georgian De Arrascaeta, and despite taking a fair while to get to his feet, the Uruguay goalscorer will face no action from the referee!

39 mins: Darwin Nunez finds space down the right again and looks to find Luis Suarez to his left in the box. The ball is cut out well though by Salis Abdul Samed, and the Ghana midfielder comes away with the ball before winning a free-kick.

37 mins: Mohammed Kudus drifts in-field once more and picks the ball up from 25 yards. He tries to find the bottom corner, but the shot is deflected wide by Jose Gimenez, giving the Black Stars a corner!

34 mins: Uruguay midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is forced off with an injury, with the Tottenham Hotspur man replaced by Matias Vecino.

32 mins: GOOOOOOAAAALLLL!!!!! Sublime strike, and Uruguay double their lead!!!! Facundo Pellistri cuts inside and finds Luis Suarez. He flicks the ball up to Darwin Nunez, who heads back inside to Suarez, who dinks it over to Georgian De Arrascaeta. He arrives late to volley a well-timed shot into the bottom corner, and in a matter of moments La Celeste fly into a 2-0 lead!

29 mins: 10 wild minutes of football end, giving us and the crowd a chance to breathe again. If you’re just joining us, Ghana had a penalty but Andre Ayew’s poor effort was saved, and Uruguay went up the other end to score through Georgian De Arrascaeta just six minutes later!

26 mins: GOOOOOOOAAAAALLLL!!!!! Uruguay go 1-0 up!!! A cross from the right evades two Ghanaian defenders and finds Luis Suarez, who jinks inside to shoot low on goal. Lawrence Ati-Zigi gets down to save it, but doesn’t parry away from the goalmouth, and Georgian De Arrascaeta follows in to nod in the opening goal from just yards out! Ghana are made to pay for their missed penalty almost immediately by Uruguay, and where have we heard that before?

Watch Sergio Rochet save Andre Ayew’s penalty for Ghana (if you’re in the US):

Watch if you’re in the UK:

23 mins: OFF THE LINE!!! Darwin Nunez races through on goal again, and chips the ball over the onrushing Lawrence Ati-Zigi. With the goalkeeper beaten, the ball flies towards the net, but Mohammed Salisu gets back to hook it off the line for Ghana! This game has no brakes whatsoever!

21 mins: HE’S SAVED IT! Captain Andre Ayew, the only player left from Ghana’s 2010 campaign, steps up to take the penalty, and his slow, slow run-up is met by a meek shot, and Sergio Rochet guesses right to push it clear! What a moment, and what drama between these two sides already!

18 mins: PENALTY! The referee goes over to look at the pitch-side VAR screen, and isn’t there long before returning to the pitch and pointing to the spot! Uruguay aren’t happy whatsoever, and he books Darwin Nunez for dissent as he and his teammates surround the official!

17 mins: The VAR referees are indeed looking at this, as Sergio Rochet’s challenge on Mohammed Kudus looks more and more like a penalty with every angle given…

16 mins: SAVED! Jordan Ayew cuts inside from the left and blasts a low shot goalwards. Sergio Rochet parries in the Uruguay goal, but can only spill the ball into the path of the onrushing Mohammed Kudus, who is taken out just after getting to the ball! The referee points for a corner, but with VAR on hand, we’ve likely not seen the last of this!

13 mins: CHANCE! Georgian De Arrascaeta’s header is latched onto by Darwin Nunez, who bursts towards the box. He’s followed closely by Mohammed Salisu and Daniel Amartey, who crowd him out and win the ball before he is able to pull the trigger!

12 mins: There’s plenty of challenges going in between Federico Valverde and Salis Abdul Samed already, in what is become quite the battle between the two in midfield!

9 mins: Guillermo Varela surges down the right and looks to feed Facundo Pellistri down the byline, but the winger is forced wide and his cut-back into the box finds only white shirts!

7 mins: Mohammed Kudus is fouled in midfield and Thomas Partey crosses the ball into the box. It’s attacked well, but Guillermo Varela heads clear for Uruguay and La Celeste clear their lines.

4 mins: Ghana build well on the edge of the Uruguay box as Mohammed Kudus creates space before feeding Thomas Partey. He’s dispossessed though, and the South Americans race away on the counter. Darwin Nunez looks to make a run into the box off Georgian De Arrascaeta’s pass, but goes down on the edge of the area to no avail.

2 mins: Jose Gimenez slides into a 50-50 with Mohammed Kudus, and the Uruguay defender comes off worse, but eventually gets to his feet after clutching his calf for a while.

Kick-Off: And away we go! Luis Suarez kicks the game off for Uruguay, and this long-anticipated match is off and running in Al Wakrah!

5 mins from kickoff: The two sets of players head out onto the pitch, both knowing it may be the final time they do so in Qatar in 2022, and they’ll belt these national anthems out with passion and pride ahead of kick-off, which will come in just a few short moments!

10 mins from kickoff: The final two fixtures in group H will kick-off simultaneously in just 10 minutes time, and the stakes couldn’t be higher for this game in particular. Portugal are already through, and anything other than a South Korea victory will see the Taegeuk Warriors head home.

This game though, has everything riding on it. Uruguay have disappointed so far, but only their first win, and first goal(s), of the tournament will see them progress to the last 16. Ghana will doing everything in their power to stop that from happening, particularly as a win for the Black Stars will send them through, and knock Uruguay out in the process.

15 mins from kickoff: The stadium is poised, the supporters are raucous, and the pitch is ready and waiting for the 22 sets of Ghanaian and Uruguayan boots to take to it, as a re-match 12 years in the making gets underway in 15 minutes time!

30 mins from kickoff: The return of Luis Suarez to Uruguay’s starting XI will buoy spirits from Montevideo to Mercedes, and with just half an hour to go, the decorated Nacional striker will be chomping at the bit to get onto the pitch against a side who he has become the nemesis of in the last 12 years.

Still, the veteran ex-Ajax, Liverpool, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid striker won’t let that pressure get to him – he’s under enough as it is, captaining his country in a match that Uruguay simply have to win in order to progress to the next round.

45 mins from kickoff: Uruguay have reverted to the back four they used against South Korea, having switched to a 3-5-2 in their 2-0 loss to Portugal.

Inevitably, Luis Suarez, who was rather ineffective off the bench against Portugal, is back in the starting lineup for this game, and with Diego Godin dropped, captains the side against Ghana! He’ll lead the line alongside Darwin Nunez, with the former and current Liverpool strikers looking to find the net for a Uruguay side yet to do so in Qatar.

Elsewhere, Godin’s absence sees a shake-up in midfield, with Georgian De Arrascaeta and Facundo Pellistri filling in on the flanks of a 4-4-2 formation that coach Diego Alonso will hope gives Suarez and Nunez plenty of ammunition in the Ghanian box.

55 mins from kickoff: Both lineups have been confirmed in this Group H decider.

Ghana’s only changes come in the wide defensive positions, with Alidu Seidu and Baba Rahman coming back into the side having dropped to the bench against South Korea.

The pair started as wing-backs in a 5-3-2 formation against Portugal, but today will provide the width in a four-man back-line as Ghana retain the 4-2-3-1 they used to beat South Korea 3-2 last time out.

1 hr from kickoff: Ghana’s fans certainly aren’t feeling the pressure, with 60 minutes to go until one of the group stages’ most anticipated matches. There’s one hell of a party going on in Al Wakrah at the moment!

The Black Stars’ run to the quarter-finals in 2010 had the whole of Africa cheering them to glory before being dumped out by Uruguay, and will the atmosphere inside Al Janoub Stadium reflect that belief against the same opponents?

1 hr 15 mins from kickoff: The state of play in Group H puts far more pressure on Uruguay than it does Ghana, with the South American side needing to win at all costs to stand any chance whatsoever of reaching the last 16.

Ghana only need to avoid defeat to go through, as a draw will take them to five points behind Portugal. However, a South Korea victory over the already-qualified group leaders would take them above the Black Stars, and given the frequency and magnitude of upsets that we’ve already seen in Qatar, you wouldn’t bet against one more happening before the group stages are wrapped up.

Ghana therefore will be going all out to win this game, not only to seal a safe passage into the latter stages of the tournament, but also to enact ‘revenge‘ on Uruguay for that infamous quarter-final back in 2010.

1 hr 30 mins from kickoff: Ghana head coach Otto Addo expects the onus on Uruguay to attack to provide his team with opportunities.

“It’s a normal game and we want to qualify for the next stage, so we should be ale to win,” he said. “We are prepared for anything; we expect them to press high and dictate the game.”

“They know that a draw isn’t good enough enough for them and this leaves them no option than to attack more. That will be a chance for us because there will be more gaps in their defence.”

2 hrs from kickoff: Uruguay set off on a day when they need to score their first goal of these finals.

2 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: Ever the shy, retiring and diplomatic type, Uruguay icon Luis Suarez did not offer an olive branch when he was asked about the extraordinarily dramatic match between these two teams at the 2010 finals in which Ghana would have scored the decisive goal had he not handled the ball on the line.

“Maybe I would apologise if I tackled and injured a player but in this situation I took the red card, the referee gave a penalty and it’s not my fault because I didn’t miss the penalty,” he said, summarising what happened before Uruguay eventually triumphed in a shootout.

“The player who missed it said he’d do the same. It’s not my responsibility to take the penalty.”

3 hrs from kickoff: Ghana have been out for a stroll. “Black Stars walk before the battle,” they’ve captioned this. “Today is the day.”

3 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: Ghana have scored with five of their six shots on target at the FIFA 2022 World Cup so far, including all three against South Korea last time out.

They can break the record for the most goals they have scored at the tournament (five, in 2010) by finding the back of the net today.

4 hrs from kickoff: Despite the attacking talent within their ranks, Uruguay will make it four hours of football without scoring if they fail to net within the first three minutes of this game.

They haven’t scored in three of their last four matches. And a possible tip for gamblers: both teams haven’t scored in Uruguay’s last nine games – and 12 of their last 13.

4 hrs 30 mins from kickoff: Uruguay have used four players aged 35 or older at this tournament – Martín Caceres, Edinson Cavani, Luis Suarez and Diego Godín.

That makes it only the second time a nation has used four players that old at a single edition, along with Panama in 2018.

5 hrs from kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of this Group H clash as Ghana go up against Uruguay. This one is a repeat of the infamous meeting between the two sides in the World Cup quarterfinal back in 2010, and ahead of the game the Black Stars have had some support from some unlikely sources! Southampton’s Mohammed Salisu will be in the lineup for the Black Stars today, and his club have made it clear where their allegiances lay! Stay tuned, as we bring you all the action.

Ghana vs. Uruguay lineups, team news

Diego Alonso is confident he has come up with a tactical plan to beat Ghana and secure passage to the knockout stages of the World Cup.

The Uruguay boss has used two different formations across the first two games — a dour 0-0 draw with South Korea and 2-0 defeat to Portugal.

But, whatever shape they line up in, he expects his team to be fully prepared to exploit Ghana’s weaknesses on Friday.

He said: “We know where we have to aim and what we have to do. We are going to give everything in the next game to qualify.”

Ghana predicted starting 11

(4-2-3-1, right to left): 1. Ati-Zigi (GK) — 2. Lamptey, 18. Amartey, 4. Salisu, 14. Mensah — 5. Partey, 21. Abdul Samed — 20. Kudus, 10. A. Ayew, 9. J. Ayew — 19. Williams

  • Injured: None
  • Suspended: None

After his side kept their hopes of progression alive with a 3-2 win over South Korea last time out, Otto Addo could be tempted to stick with the same 11.

That would mean Gideon MensahTariq Lamptey and Jordan Ayew all retaining their places after missing out on the defeat to Portugal that kicked off Ghana’s tournament.

Uruguay predicted starting 11

(3-5-2, right to left): 23. Rochet (GK) — 2. Gimenez, 3. Godin, 19. Coates —13. Varela, 15. Valverde, 6. Bentancur, 5. Vecino, 16. Olivera — 11. Nunez, 9. Suarez.

  • Injured: Araujo
  • Suspended: None

Although a switch to a 3-5-2 didn’t quite pay dividends against Portugal, Alonso may stick with the same shape and try partnering Luis Suarez with Darwin Nunez this time around hoping for different results.

That would leave Edinson Cavani as an option from the bench late on.
