Skylar Thompson injury update: Dolphins QB leaves game vs. Vikings, questionable to return with thumb injury

For the fourth consecutive week, the Dolphins are dealing with an injury to their starting quarterback.

Skylar Thompson went to the locker room in the first half of the Dolphins’ Week 6 matchup against the Vikings after taking a hit on a Jordan Hicks sack.

The rookie was able to walk off the field under his own power, but the Dolphins deemed him questionable to return with a thumb injury.

Thompson was making his first NFL start on Sunday after winning the third-string job following a stellar preseason. The seventh-round pick had completed 7 of 13 passes for 89 yards before exiting the contest.

Teddy Bridgewater came into the game to replace Thompson. Bridgewater had opened the season as the team’s backup quarterback and started the team’s Week 5 game against the Jets. He got injured early in the contest and was declared out as a result of the NFL’s revamped concussion protocol.

Dolphins QB depth chart

The Dolphins have two quarterbacks on their active roster for Sunday’s game. They are as follows.

Rank Player
1 Skylar Thompson
2 Teddy Bridgewater

If Thompson is unable to return to Sunday’s game, Bridgewater will be the lone healthy quarterback on Miami’s roster. It’s unclear who the team will employ as its emergency quarterback should Bridgewater have to exit.

The good news is that Bridgewater is a savvy, experienced veteran with 64 starts under his belt and a 33-31 record. He will capably quarterback the team against the Vikings.

Additionally, normal starter Tua Tagovailoa is expected to return to action in Week 7. So, even if Thompson is out long-term, the Dolphins should still have quality depth available at the quarterback position.

But for Week 6, it may be on Bridgewater to carry the team.
