“The Granddaddy of them All” might not be working to crown a national champion this season, but that doesn’t take away from the history of playing in Pasadena at the end of the college football season.
This year will be the 109th edition of the Rose Bowl. It has been played annually since 1916 and was first played in 1902. The next-oldest bowls are the Orange, Sugar and Sun bowls, which have been played since 1935.
The latest foes have not yet been announced for the 2023 Rose Bowl. Last year, Ohio State beat Utah to claim its ninth Rose Bowl victory, breaking a tie with Michigan for the second-most behind USC (25).

The 2023 Rose Bowl will be the 109th edition of the game, and will once again be played in Pasadena, Calif., which has hosted all but two of the games (1942, 2021).
Who plays in the Rose Bowl 2023?
The Rose Bowl has not announced the two teams that will play in the contest. Historically, it has featured a matchup of Big Ten vs. Pac-12 teams, with last year’s contest being between Ohio State and Utah.
With Michigan all but guaranteed to go to the College Football Playoff, the Big Ten representative is still unknown. The Rose Bowl is reportedly considering taking Penn State instead of Ohio State, even if the Buckeyes miss the CFP, due to the Buckeyes having been in the Rose Bowl twice in the past four years. But with USC falling to Utah in the Pac-12 championship, it appears Ohio State will be in the CFP, which would make Penn State the Big Ten representative.
The Pac-12 side of things appears to be clear as well. With USC all but eliminated from the CFP, the choice will come down to the Trojans or Pac-12 champion Utah. At this point, it appears it will be the Utes.
